In 1920 Calcutta, twelve-year-old Nirupama lights the gas lamps of Shyampukur Lane with her father, Haren Babu. For thirteen nights the lamp outside the shuttered house at number 41 has gone dark at 9:17. Nirupama is sure it is a bad burner, because a burner can be fixed before the inspector fines her tired father. But Haren won't relight it, and someone has been touching its valve. Her search through lamp logs, household witnesses and the keeper's hidden records leads to unpaid wages, vanished letters and a clerk the lane has agreed not to discuss, and to the question of whether exposing one hidden name will also expose the people who kept it hidden, her father among them.
