About
By the Tamasa river a hunter's arrow kills one of a pair of cranes, and the old hermit Valmiki's grief pours out of him as the world's first verse. The Creator commands him to tell the life of Rama, the one good man, and gives him the sight to see all of it: every war, every kindness, and the one cruelty at the end. When he opens his eyes, the twin boys who live in his hermitage are waiting at his feet. They have their father's face. They have never heard his name.
