Haru, seventeen, finds the tin of letters her boss never delivered in his thirty-eight years as the town postman, and decides to deliver them before he burns them.

Four chickens share a coop in a wooded backyard. The coop has an internal coop section with nesting bars, and a external fenced section called the Run where the chickens play and eat food and water. The brown chicken, Nugget, is the low chicken on the pecking order and is made an outcast of by the other three chickens. The green-and-black chicken, Chickeera is the bully, constantly pecking Nugget, and preventing her from accessing food and water. She forces Nugget into the coop on her own where she sits lonely and solemn on the nesting bars. The white chicken, Mrs. Nuggy, minds her own business and follows along, but does nothing to protect Nugget. The largest chicken of them all, the grey hen named Madge, initially supports the bullying of Nugget, but in the end she befriends Nugget, stands up for her, and protects her. She brings Nugget back into the run to rejoin the flock with the rest of the chickens.
